SOCIETY OF KINDLING HANDICRAFT AND INDIGENOUS ART
is an organisation created by the Women In Bengal to preserve the tradition of Bengal textile and other art form as a tool for women empowerment.
OUR MISSION is to assist the survival of the traditional knowledge and of the artisans involved in preserving their heritage, in all fields.
The members of SOKHIA work in the villages in the districts of Bardhhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad in the state of West Bengal where we train the local ladies to spin, weave and embroider on cotton and silk. We also train them in batik and block printing on woven fabric. Besides training, we also provide aid for the education, health, and enhancement of their daily life for the families involved in the traditional Textile and handicraft.
We arrange assignments for them and help them to market their products. Sometimes we organise special exhibitions and sales of their products in various cities in India, and, in the future, we hope to extend these sales internationally.
We were the initiator and sole organiser of the MUSLIN AND HERITAGE TOUR CIRCUIT OF BENGAL, having been appointed by the government of West Bengal through the West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board under Project Muslin meant for the revival and promotion of legendary Muslin of Bengal.
SOKHIA is the recipient of BEST INNOVATIVE TOURISM CONCEPT AWARD, at the India International Travel Mart at Chennai in the Year 2018. We want Tourism to play active role in the promotion of traditional knowledge and share it with the world.
